Hegyalja and Mád’s volcanic character is easier to understand when you can see and feel the place for yourself. With our recommended routes, we would like to bring you closer to the terroir and to the wines produced here.

For centuries — and probably even in earlier times — there was usually a close connection between the settlements of smaller regions. Today, we often no longer see the traces of the routes that once connected Erdőbénye or Tállya with Mád. Medieval roads have faded into obscurity, while modern machinery has created new tracks and routes. In some places, however, remnants of the medieval roads can still be seen, and dressed stone markers still indicate where the old routes once ran. Curious explorers can still find these paths today.

Erdőbénye can be reached across the hills by several different routes. Our recommended route (18.5 km) is one of the easiest crossings to complete. We particularly recommend this hike in autumn and spring. With a short detour, the Várhegy hill above Erdőbénye offers a spectacular panorama to lift the spirits. If you are lucky, the path leading there will be covered in a colourful shower of autumn leaves, helping you leave the noise of everyday life behind.
