Mád Short – Where the Lord Comes to Rest: Adventures Around Úrágya
If you want to truly discover a wine region, the best place to start is among the vineyard rows. If you want to understand a terroir, walk through it and taste the wines born from its stones. The volcanic character of Hegyalja and Mád becomes easier to understand when you see and feel the landscape yourself. With our recommended walks, we would like to bring you closer to these unique vineyards and the wines created from them.
Úrágya, Holdvölgy and Középhegy – the western side of Mád is full of surprises.
The Úrágya vineyard rewards your efforts with breathtaking views while making centuries of history feel almost tangible. Ancient stone retaining walls and historic vineyard terraces complete this journey through time.
Continuing on, you arrive at Mád's "western basin." Here, an open panorama unfolds towards the Great Hungarian Plain, while to the northwest the distinctive cone of Várhegy near Tállya dominates the horizon.
The hike is easy to complete, with several resting spots and scenic viewpoints along the way. It can comfortably be enjoyed in a single outing, but it also offers an excellent opportunity to continue exploring towards Tállya. And when the day draws to a close, the sunset truly speaks for itself—whether you choose Holdvölgy or Középhegy as your destination.
Recommended wines:
- Szepsy István / Úrágya Furmint
- Holdvölgy / Intuition No. 1 Tokaji Zéta Szamorodni
