Mád Wine Challenge – 15 km Vineyard Trail
This route is defined by Mád’s iconic vineyards, historic vineyard sites, and breathtaking panoramic views. One of the most spectacular points of the hike is the summit of Öreg Király, offering stunning views over the distinctive landscapes of the Tokaj Wine Region.
As the route follows the ridge of Nagy-Néma Hill, the landscape gradually reveals a different side of itself. Deep within the forest, visitors can discover traces of former man-made terraces and old wine houses, bearing witness to the area's centuries-old viticultural heritage. Along the ridgeline, massive boulder fields emerge, adding a unique character to the scenery.
The route also crosses the upper terrace of the Kővágó vineyard site, where another breathtaking panorama opens up towards the west. On clear days, the Bükk Mountains can be seen on the horizon, and under exceptional visibility conditions, even the peaks of the Tatra Mountains may appear in the distance.
The first written record of the Király vineyard site dates back to the 13th century, making this hike not only a remarkable nature experience but also a journey through history. The vineyard sites, terraces, and remnants of former agricultural buildings evoke the centuries-old heritage of the Tokaj Wine Region.

Elevation gain: approx. 400 m
Difficulty: Easy – featuring a few moderate uphill sections
Terrain: Mostly forest and vineyard roads, linked in places by scenic and charming trails.

To follow the route, you will first need a hiking app on your phone. We recommend downloading the KOMOOT app and registering with your email address. No subscription is required.
Why KOMOOT? Because it provides access to satellite imagery without a subscription, making navigation much easier. If you already have a subscription to another hiking app, satellite map layers may also be available there. Once you have downloaded the app, all you need is the GPX file. Your phone will then offer to open it with the KOMOOT app.
